The Islands of the Hebrides - Innse Gall
Isle of North Uist - Uist a Tuath
This island is an incredible contrast of beaches, machair lands, lochs and moorland hills linked by a circular 45 miles road around the island. A must for birdwatchers and anyone who enjoys quiet islands roads which meander through crofting communities. There is a RSPB nature reserve for birds at Balranald which is simply beautiful. In the North you reach Solllas after passing the offshore island of Valley which has a deserted mansion on it and can be reached at low tide across the sand. There is a CO-OP supermarket in Sollas for supplies and further north the road links to Berneray, Prince Charles favourite island in Britain and the ferry port for connection to Harris. Coming back around the East coast you would swear you were on a different island as you pass fresh water lochs, peat banks and see rocky Gneiss hills and sea lochs all around. Lochmaddy is the largest village in North Uist and has a hotel, café, exhibition centre, shop and petrol station here. The highest hill is Eaval at 347m but the main road does not negotiate it.
