The Islands of the Hebrides - Innse Gall
Isle of Barra - Eilean Bharraigh
The smallest and most remote of our island chain. Only five miles across by eight miles long with one ring road all the way around, this is a great island for a days cycle trip or for exploring more leisurely. The highest hill on Barra is Heaval at 384m in the south of the island and has great views from its peak. The ring road follows the coast and takes you past Castlebay on the east and many beaches and coves around the island. In the north you can take a detour to the Eoligarry peninsula which has beaches on every side and views to South Uist, Eriskay and the Monarchs. At the southern end of the island there is a road leading to the Vatersay causeway which takes you past Beinn Tangavat 333m and onto Vatersay bay, a beautiful beach with views to uninhabited offshore islands. The capital of Barra; Castlebay is a great port for entertainment, accommodation, supplies and is also where you catch the boat to Lochboisdale. A smaller passenger ferry runs from Eoligarry in the north to Ludag in South Uist, they accept bicycles.
